I have spent a lifetime of making women look good, considering myself a beauty expert. Prior to starting my direct sales business, I was a cosmetology instructor, salon manager, and cosmetologist. What I have discovered through the years is all women have a collection of old color mink fur lashes in their bathroom. In fact, many are extremely proud to show it to me! Many of these products were hardly used, so they rationalize that they may one day use them. What they do not realize is that those tiny little containers are an excellent breeding ground for bacteria, especially if they have not been opened in a long time!

Lrsmn Every product has a different shelf life, and some are more than others. If it is any kind of color mink fur lashes that contains active ingredients, it will have an expiration date on them. (for example, products with sunscreens) Common sense has to step in when there is no expiration date. My company recently launched some new refillable compacts with mineral powder products. As I begin to show my customers these new products, I am HORRIFIED at some of the little treasures that they insist on showing me.
Our compact packaging system has been the same for the last 13 years. That is a long time for anything to last, not just in the cosmetic industry. Yet, I have had customers present me with colors in the packaging that was used prior to that- making them over 13 years old. All that I can say is YUCK! Why don’t they throw old color mink fur lashes away?
Here is why you should throw old makeup away.
While these dirty little secrets are hiding in your bathroom, chances are they are also growing bacteria. Even one eye infection or acne breakout that requires the attention of a doctor will far outweigh the cost of replacing them. In addition, trends change frequently in the fashion and cosmetic industry. What looked good even 5 years ago, may not look as good now. Replace them immediately! Use it as a reason for an updated, new look!
Here are some guidelines in how to handle your new color mink fur lashes to reduce the chances of premature bacteria growth.
- Never use your fingers to apply products directly from the containers. This means skin care and color cosmetics. If you have to remove products from a jar or container, use a spatula. For applying color, always use applicators, and replace or clean them regularly.
- The oils on your skin can be transferred to your makeup through your brushes. Get in the habit of cleaning them regularly. Once a week is good. You can use a gentle shampoo or body wash and allow them to dry naturally.
- Never share color mink fur lashes, even with your best friend or family member. Everyone has a certain amount of “friendly” bacteria that may be hostile to your friends. This is particularly true with eye products.
- Don’t pump your mascara prior to applying. This only introduces air and shortens the shelf life of the product.
How long is too long? That varies greatly, but most ophthalmologists are in agreement that 3 months is long enough for mascara or eyeliner- no matter what! It is just not worth risking a nasty eye infection.
Lip gloss that comes with an applicator is usually 6 months before you should discard it, but most don’t last that long.
Liquid products like moisturizers, foundations, and other skin care or cosmetics that are packaged that way usually are good for about a year. If it develops an odor , throw it away.
Eye shadows, pencils, color mink fur lashes liners, concealer, powders, lipsticks and most other skin care and cosmetics should be kept 12-18 months- that’s it! They do not improve with age, like wine.
If you are not sure how long that you have had that item, chances are it is much longer than you think. It is really in your best interest to replace it. Look for signs of aging such as a suspicious odor, discoloration, chalky or dried-out appearance, separation, or anything else unusual.

Spring is an excellent time to start your cleaning out those color mink fur lashes. I recommend that you make a habit of doing this each year. Not only will you look better, but you will be healthier and happier too!
